Brooks Permissions is celebrating 75 years of Gwendolyn Brooks’ Pulitzer Prize winning book, Annie Allen.

The celebration will begin October 1, 2024 (75 years from the original publishing date of Annie Allen) and conclude on May 1, 2025 (75 years from the day Ms. Brooks won the Pulitzer for Annie Allen).
Our goal is to enlighten, educate, enrich and entertain as we celebrate the legacy of Gwendolyn Brooks and her groundbreaking work. The celebration will include programming from individual artists and cultural organizations from around the world. We invite YOU to participate in this international event! Submit your ideas for events, presentations, classes, lectures, performances and any other additional innovative programming.
THE BOOK
Annie Allen
The 75th Anniversary Edition
The new publication will include the original manuscript printed in the 1949 publication. Annie Allen is described as a story told by a series of poems. You will follow Annie Allen’s growth from childhood to womanhood in a community faced with poverty, despair, racial discrimination and war. These poems reflect the times of 75 years ago as well as today.
This new edition includes tribute poems and critical essays from some of our most talented writers.
THE RECOGNITION
A global celebration of living Black female poets in the tradition of Gwendolyn Brooks.
Brooks Permissions’ Living Legacy project illuminates and celebrates living Black female poets from around the world. Poets are selected through a public nomination process. The final annotated list will be shared with cultural organizations, schools and bookstores. It will also reside on this website as an important resource.
